Old Oswestry Hill Fort

Known as "Caer Ogyrfan" this Iron Age fort covers over forty acres with the remains of elaborate defenses. It is said to be the birthplace of Queen Guinevere and the site for the final battle of King Cynddylan.

Ironbridge Gorge

Ironbridge, Shropshire, England 

A historic valley at the heart of the Industrial Revolution: home of the first successful commercial smelting of iron with coke, the building of the world's first iron bridge and the first iron boat. Also has some good pubs.

St Albans

Hertfordshire, England 

St Albans in Autumn. The cathedral in the centre of the photograph dates back to the 11th century (around 1077). In the foreground is Verulamium Park and Lake and in the background the centre of St Albans.

The Wrekin

Shropshire, England 

Climbing to 1000 feet above the Shropshire countryside, 1170 feet if you include the top of the television transmitter tower. This view is looking north over the top of the Wrekin towards Wellington.

Shrewsbury Castle

The castle dates back to 1066 and the reign of William the Conqueror, and has been significantly modified over the centuries. To the left of the photo is Shrewsbury Railway Station and in the background the River Severn.

Carew Castle

The remains of a magnificent Norman Castle with remains that predate that era. The Mill in the background is the only restored tidal mill in Wales.

Lake Vyrnwy

Powys, Wales 

Lake Vyrnwy was created in 1888 by the formation of a stone dam (84 feet tall and 1172 feet long) in order to supply water to the city of Liverpool. The lake and surrounding countryside is now a nature reserve.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales 

Built by Thomas Telford and completed in 1805, the structure represents a masterpiece of Georgian engineering. Amazing to cross in a narrowboat as there's no railing or barrier between you and the ground below.

Oxford

Oxfordshire, England 

The centre of the ancient city of Oxford. Many of the buildings visible are part of the University colleges, including the famous circular Radcliffe Camera.

Christ Church College

The Tower over the entrance is known as Tom Tower and was designed by Christopher Wren and completed in 1682.

Shrewsbury

In the loop of the River Severn lies Frankwell sports grounds with a cricket match in play. Shrewsbury railway station, castle and football ground are visible in the top left of the photo. Shrewsbury town centre is at the top of the photo with Frankwell bridge and the Welsh bridge to its right.

Battlefield Church

Built in 1406 to commemorate the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. The church lies to the north of Shrewsbury in open countryside next to the site of the battle.

St Chad's

Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England 

Completed in 1792, St Chad's Church is quite unusual with its 150 foot circular nave and 150 foot tower. The tower contains 12 bells, the heaviest of which weighs almost two tons.
